GOP pulls TV ad featuring picture of murdered child; apologizes to family

PoliticsMN_WEBSITELogokeithdowneyThe Republican Party of Minnesota apologized to the family of a 4-year-old boy who was murdered by his stepmother for using his image in a campaign advertisement with blamed Governor Mark Dayton for his death.

The Star Tribune reported Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Keith Downey called Yvonne Dean, the grandmother of Eric Dean, and initially informed Dean that the party had the legal right to use Eric’s image in the advertisement. Downey later called back and said the image of Eric and any mention of his name would be removed from the advertisement.

Yesterday morning Mike McFadden, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, called on the Republican Party of Minnesota to remove the image of Eric from the advertisement and apologize to the family. Jeff Johnson, the Republican candidate for governor, also said the “picture should never have been used in an ad.”

Although Downey said the advertisement would be taken down, there were reports last evening on Twitter that the advertisement was still being broadcast. Please check back to politics.mn for additional analysis and information on the 2014 elections.

  1. Where did this Keith Downey come from? It is one embarrassment after another with this guy. Just look at his photo and you can tell something ain’t right. Who are the delegates at State Central who voted him in? Neocons and Rinos it must be.

  2. Tea Party Potentate says:

What about Dayton stealing our freedom and running bonding scams that likely benefit his Rockefeller Chase Bank owning sons? The argument Downey was making here was that Dayton doesn’t have enough bureaucracy already? This Keith Downey has got to go. Bring back Sutton, that guy won the House and Senate, even though he spent piles of money doing it.

  3. It is horrors like this my service in Grenada was supposed to prevent.
